This girl is standing guard up on one of the higher towers of the castle. She is required to remain standing while on guard duty, but as it is very late and nobody else is around, she can get away with leaning up against a wall (at least for a few minutes). The moon is nearly full, shining down a cold blue on the castle and surrounding countryside. A brazier is lit inside the tower, casting a soft orange glow on the interior.

Enough of the image description (hopefully most of it was obvious by just looking at the picture).

This started as a pencil sketch. I then scanned it and spent MANY hours adding color, texture, and shading using Paint Shop Pro 11. It isn't the greatest composition though; I really should have spent more time really planning everything out before I jumped into it. Oh well...next time.

The textures here are creepy, because they look so realistic...
Seriously, this is an amazing piece!
Keep working!

Thanks; I spent many hours working on shading, and although it isn't as good as it could be, I do think parts of the picture turned out OK. ;-)

Like I said, there are parts of it that I think turned out well. It's just certain parts that are sort of dragging the rest of it down. ;-)

Once I get some more time (which probably won't be any time soon with my heavy load of college and work) I hope to do her again, in a different pose and setting, and with a better overall composition.

VERY good and somewhat subtle use of textures here. Amazing variation of color with cool grays and blues. This really conveys a lonely night on duty. If I were to offer any critique at all it would be wishing for a little bit more detail in the sky. I know the main focus is on the character, but possibly a few subtle stars or celestial bodies, maybe a setting moon. Something for her and the viewer to be contemplating in the distance. Though it would be hard to choose a location where this wouldn't interfere with the spear. Another idea to compliment the lighting would be a torch on the wall, possibly with a low flame or ashes. Anyway, GREAT work with attention to detail. I only hope to be able to have the patience to spend the proper amount of time pieces like this require. Right now I am plagued with the need to finish pieces in 1-2 days. I'm def adding you to my watch list, keep up the great work.

Thanks for the comments. ;-)

I did debate whether or not to add a torch or lamp on the wall. I kinda decided against it as it might have felt a little cramped in the space provided (plus an up-close of a torch can be hard to create). A few stars in the sky wouldn't be a bad idea...I might add some in if I ever get a chance. But like I said, this isn't the best composition in the world. Her pose isn't as natural as it should be, and the overall setting isn't the greatest either.

I do hope to draw her (or another character similar) again, this time with a much better pose and setting. (Lots of thumbnail sketches first, unlike how I did this one.)
